Decisions about pregnancy should be made by a woman, her family, and her doctor — not by politicians, and least of all by politicians in another state.

California voters enshrined reproductive freedom in our state constitution, and state law shields California doctors who provide abortion care from prosecution by anti-abortion states. Steve Hilton would tear that shield down.

In a public health emergency, we all deserve leaders who give us the facts and help us protect one another.

Steve Hilton did the opposite. During the deadliest public health crisis in a century, he used his Fox News show — which averaged 1.9 million viewers in 2020, by Fox's own count — to tell people the danger wasn't real.

Free and fair elections are the foundation of everything else — they're how we the people hold power accountable, and we should all be able to trust the results.

After the 2020 election, Steve Hilton used his national platform to cast doubt on them. He demanded a "fair investigation" into unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud on his Fox News broadcast — and Trump tweeted the clips out, without comment, the day after the race was called for Joe Biden.

Whether white, black, or brown, we should all be able to live in California and exercise our constitutional rights without fear that law enforcement will turn on us.

But the current administration has created a masked, unaccountable immigration force that ProPublica describes as "an unfettered and unaccountable national police force" — one that has detained more than 170 U.S. citizens — and California is where it was tried out first: ProPublica reports that Santa Ana "has proven to be a template for much larger raids and even more violent arrests in Chicago and elsewhere." Steve Hilton's response?

We all want clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and open spaces our kids can grow up enjoying.

Californians live with the reality of climate change every year — wildfires, drought, and extreme heat. Steve Hilton's plan is to dismantle the protections we built to fight it.

We all want a government that works for us as efficiently and effectively as possible. Real reform is badly needed — but given how big and complicated government is, it takes careful, well-thought-out solutions so we don't make things worse.

That's not what DOGE was. Elon Musk's operation tore through the federal government — mass layoffs, gutted services, and cuts that hit California harder than almost any state. Steve Hilton's answer? Do it again, from the governor's office.

We all want leaders who stick around to live with the consequences of what they sell us.

Steve Hilton isn't that. Before he wanted to run California, he helped talk the United Kingdom into one of the most damaging self-inflicted wounds in its modern history.
